The registration of genetic resources is one of the functions of the Plant Protection Directorate as a complementary service to Agri-Environment-Climate Measure 6 (AECM 6) 2014-2020. Holders of genetic resources that qualify for funding under one of the AECM may consult with the Plant Protection Directorate for the verification of breeds of the Maltese Black Chicken and Maltese Ox.
The Plant Protection Directorate as the entity responsible for the implementation of Regulation (EU) No 511/2014 facilitates the registration of ex situ collections that collection holders wish to have included in the EU’s register of collections. The scope of this register is to guarantee that users of genetic resources that utilize such genetic resources for research or development activities, do so in compliance with the EU-wide access and benefit sharing obligations to seek prior informed consent and mutually agreed terms from countries regulating access to genetic resources within the Union.
These services are provided through the Conservation of Genetic Resources Unit (CGRU) within the Directorate.
